In White Christmas, one of my favorite movies, there is a song that goes, “When you’re in bed and cannot sleep/count your blessings instead of sheep/ . . . Then you’ll fall asleep, counting your blessings . . .”
Great movie, great song, but sometimes those blessings are hard to see. Sometimes they are disguised!
There are two things I want to share about this.
First, many things happen that seem at the time to be an “inconvenience” but end up turning into a golden opportunity.
For example: I know a couple who met because there was no other seat for the gentleman to sit on the bus down to a protest. Forty years later they are as happily married as ever. How could he have known that taking that one seat would shift his life so dramatically? A blessing disguised as an empty seat on the bus.
I got a “this is my new girlfriend” introduction from a good male friend of mine. And I was in BITCH mode! I gave her a fake, mildly polite smile and didn’t speak to her for the entire ride back to my apartment where male friend was dropping me off. I saw her at some point later and purposefully didn’t speak even though she smiled and waved at me! A year later, when she was still in my friend’s life, we ended up spending some time together and she is now also one of my closest friends! This was a blessing disguised as a jealous female friend (me!).
Have you ever had something go “wrong” in your day only to find out later that it was “right” all along? Have you ever blown a tire and had to get it repaired only to meet someone that you have a continued or lifelong connection to or find out that there was a terrible accident exactly where you going?
Or perhaps you met your significant other or best friend doing some task that you usually hate!
I met a woman recently at the laundry mat and we were like two kindred spirits. But generally, I abhor going to the laundry mat and she felt the same way. But if we both had not been there at that exact time, we wouldn’t have met at all! This one was a blessing disguised as dirty laundry!
My second thought on this is that we get exactly what we ask for, nothing more or nothing less, but it is usually not in the package we had in mind. This is a blessing disguised too.
Have you been asking for more challenge and suddenly come upon a very trying situation? Or wondered when you were going to have time for yourself and something suddenly dropped out of your life? These are also examples of blessings disguised.
The blessing here is sometimes simply knowing that you will always get what you ask for if only you are open to receiving it and recognizing it when it comes!
Try looking at it in a different way. Try taking a new perspective!
Do You Love Your Life Now!? I DO! (Because I am learning to see my blessings for what they really are!)
