Recently I was reading the New York Times and was struck by how many of the stories in the lead section had a negative slant. I decided to count and in fact, not including the editorials, there were 29 (!) articles that talked about death and destruction and terrorism and rapes and slayings. Contrastingly, there were 9 articles that had a decidedly neutral stance and only one that had a mostly positive slant (and that was about older people living their most adventurous lives after 50).
No wonder I don’t read the newspapers or watch the news! This was a stark reminder!
When I made the conscious decision several years ago that I was going to keep it positive, the first thing to go was the news—I didn’t want to constantly be bombarded with death and destruction.
Don’t get me wrong. I am not of the notion that if we don’t talk about it, it isn’t happening. Not at all in fact! I get that things happen, are happening. But I am of the notion that I don’t want to surround myself with all these “things”.
And guess what!? My whole world has been changing ever since! When I look for the good, I find it! Instead of viewing everyone as a potential rapist, I began to see the potential Divine—the good in people, what they do right or do well!
And what a difference that makes—looking for what’s RIGHT with people instead of what’s wrong with them!
Again, there are many very serious topics that need to be addressed! I get it! Just because you are “not at war” does not mean you are “at peace.”
I read recently, and I believe it to be true (for me at least), that all actions are either based in FEAR or they are based in Love. If it’s not one, it’s the other (unlike my example above!).
But I’d bet you anything, ANYTHING that if people began to act in LOVE based on what is true for them, “war” would cease to exist! Ultimately, the highest good for me is the same thing as the highest good for ALL!
The overwhelming majority of the worldwide population (myself definitely included), acts based on FEAR; usually fear of “not enough.”
And just like my turning off the television and refusing to read newspapers, we each see what we want to see! Nothing more, nothing less.
Think about it this way, we are experts in the things we surround ourselves with most often. Guess what you’re going to be an expert in if you constantly surround yourself with death and destruction!
All I’m saying is choose your expertise carefully and purposefully.
Do You Love Your Life Now!? I DO (partly because I turn my TV off!)
