2) Facebook Maybe, People YES! (Featured Article)
By Charlene M Brown
Have you succumbed like the other 350 (!) million users (myself included) to the Facebook craze?
Or Twitter, or any other of the many (and I do mean MANY) so-called social networking sites that have popped up over the last five years? You can be connected to people in more ways than you can count.
And yet, as people, we still need real live contact with other people!
Yes, via all these sites, you can post pictures of every single club or event you have gone to in the past five years; you can even name all the people in these pictures and show them so all the world can see. Yes it’s great to be able to reconnect with someone you have long since lost contact with, and who you were looking for.
But do you really need to reconnect with every single person in your 1st grade class? Do you really need to see every picture that has been taken in the last five years of thousands of people you don’t know? You can click and click and click, and suddenly you are looking at pictures, reading commentary about people you will probably never meet! You are engrossed in the lives of complete strangers!
What did you do for distraction before there was Facebook?
Don’t get me wrong. I have a Facebook account and I have a Twitter account. And I even use them regularly, in fact.
But nothing beats a good ole’ hug from your best friend.
Sometimes we get so distracted by the distractions, we forget that we have real lives too!
And what about your cell phone!? I know that now we live in a time where people think they can’t live without them, but think back to a time when you didn’t have one! Guess what? You got by just fine.
In fact, you were probably more on time to things (because you didn’t have the convenient excuse to call and immediately connect with someone to say you were running a few minutes behind) and perhaps even a little less stressed because people couldn’t find you every second of the day. Work stayed in the office, and you didn’t know what everybody on the train was having for dinner.
Facebook, Twitter, cell phones, and all other bits of technology certainly have their place, but they also have their limits.
I hear that people are even getting reprimanded for being on Facebook, taking sick days then having photos show up on Facebook showing they clearly weren’t sick.
And what about past lovers? Do you really want to connect with them now? It doesn’t matter who you are, if you go out to lunch or dinner with an ex-lover, without telling your current partner, it’s going to cause trouble.
Why put yourself through all this unnecessary drama?
I’m not saying don’t use these avenues to connect with people, I am saying have a purpose to using them and be mindful that other people can see everything you post! Also, I encourage you to be mindful of who you are connecting with (and take care to know who your children are connecting with).
Remember though, that you come from the people tribe and need to be in physical contact with other people to survive well.
Use caution and good sense when using the internet. And for goodness sakes, don’t let the internet be your sole source of “connecting” with people.
Go out and Hug Someone!
A Big Hug to You!
