2) Giggling Girls, Conspiring Grannies, Fledglings and Finding Faith in Humanity!
By Charlene M Brown
Except for those who lived through it with me, no one actually believes that I used to be one of the world’s biggest Pessimists!
It has been a long Journey since then, and even though I try my darnedest not to be, sometimes people just disappoint me! Especially when they are doing something stupid.
But just when I’m losing all hope, I come across people who make me believe again!
Today was one such day!
Sitting on the train to a place I occasionally visit during a daytime weekday, there are a number of young ladies who are regularly on this same train and get off at the same stop as me.
Contrary to mass media’s depiction, these girls are not loud or obnoxious—in fact most of their conversations are about the worries they face getting into college and finishing up their final exams. (I know because I have eavesdropped!
)
On this occasional train of mine, I sat down next to an elderly woman, said: “Good Morning Ma’am”, and got lost in my book.
But as I was folding the corner of the page down and preparing to get off the train, these same young ladies passed us by. The Elderly woman leans over to me and whispers conspiratorially, “I knew it was the girls because they were giggling.”
I said, whispering back, “Shouldn’t we all still giggle, wouldn’t we have more fun if we remembered what it was like to giggle with our girlfriends when we were 16.”
And we did! That Grandmother and I, we giggled! It was Great!
My spirit soared!
Then I arrive at this particular occasional place, and the guy on the property management/groundskeeping crew is gruffly telling me something about a fire drill today.
As we’re walking towards the building, there is a bird in front of the door. I had seen it immediately, but he sees it for the first time. He looks down and identifies it as a cardinal, and I say a female at that. But the bird is not moving, and we’re thinking broken wing. We take a closer look and realize it’s just a fledgling—this little one hasn’t even learned to fly yet! And the poor thing probably ran into the clear glass door.
And with the surprising gentleness of someone who regularly works with the earth (but not that of someone who drives a big truck and handles big machinery), he leans down and gently begins to prod the young fledgling out of harm’s way: “come on little one, there you go, that’s it.”
I had to smile. And my smile widened when, after this gruff man gently coaxed this bird out of the way of the door, he gracefully opened it for me and bid me farewell.
Ahh, that old judging a book by its cover routine! I was caught, I admit it!
And then finally, that same day, a different gruff man on the same grounds crew is showing little tykes how to plant flowers and be kind to the trees.
What a juxtaposition of the human spirit!
Here we have a grandmother who atypically had positive things to say about teenagers, and stereotypically macho men teaching me lessons on compassion and love!
So for all my gripes and groans and incessant calls to my sister about the dredges of humanity, I can now say with certainty that I have Faith in the Human Spirit once again!
At least for Right Now!
And ohhhh, how good it feels!
As Always,
A BIG HUG To You!
~Charli B.
