You ever have those moments where everything is ON!? You’re feeling great, looking good. All the right people are around you and you are on top of the world!
Yeah, me too.
What is it about those moments, hours, days, that has you so elated? What happens that everything is going just right?
I’ll tell you what happens: you are in “The Flow”
The Flow is when you excel. The Flow is that place where all of your puzzle pieces fit together; where all your colors coordinate. These are your good days!
I remember I had one of these days. I was walking down the street and I just felt like I was ON! I had a circle of trusted friends, I had just eaten good food, I was headed back to my place about to get some work done; it was a very good day.
I also remember a time when I was in perfect balance with a friend. We were exchanging, I was receiving and he was giving and I was giving and he was receiving, all in perfect harmony with each other. We were talking on the phone and for a very brief moment, our exchange was perfect! Then something else was said and the moment was gone.
But what I discovered from that phone conversation was that it was, in fact, possible to be in complete harmony with another person. I had never experienced it before!
The key is to learn the balance (and this is definitely an art and not a science) of exchange, of giving out and taking in.
Do you remember the saying “It is better to give than to receive”? Well, I am here to tell you that whoever said it got it all wrong. It is equally important to receive as it is t give. This helps us maintain The Flow.
Can you throw a ball with two catcher’s mitts on? Can you catch something at all if both your hands are full? No. You can’t.
This is “The Flow”. “You must empty your hands in order to catch the next thing that will come into them.” This is closer to right.
It is impossible to be in The Flow if you are not giving out and taking in at close to the same rate. It doesn’t have t be “everything”, but it does have to be something. Otherwise you will not be in The Flow.
Let me give you an example from my own life. I live by myself (absolutely by choice!). When I cook something like spaghetti or mac n cheese, I cook a whole panful—partly because of the way I watched my mother cook, but mostly because you can’t just cook spaghetti for one! So I send an S.O.S out to folks to come get a plate. If I go out to eat with someone, rarely do I pay for my own meal. The other person often unexpectedly offers to pay for my share.
With food, I am In The Flow! My giving out and taking in are about balanced.
This is also why I feel so great on those “On” days, because the amount of energy that I am giving out is approximately equal to the amount I am taking in.
For those of you who aren’t math gurus, the equation is quite simple:
Energy Out = Energy In
When we make this equation work, everything else works.
