2) Think!
By Charlene M Brown
So much of what we do these days is technology or media based. And while advances in both have made our lives much simpler in many ways, they have also made them much more complex. Now we have to worry about things like “information overload” and protecting our kids from “social media predators.”
Through all this technolization (if it conveys meaning, it’s a word!) we have forgotten how to do very basic things that used to be staples, like pay bills without them being beamed directly to our cell phones. Even my sister, who was previously very technology resistant, loves online banking and bill pay.
I am somewhat resistant myself, but I too have become lazy in that regard also! For instance: I used to check my cell phone bill number by number every month, anything over five minutes, I would check it against my physical list of contacts and my calendar to see what I was doing that day or who I was with. I was making sure I made all the calls I was being charged for. Now, because it’s online, I know I can check it whenever I want and you know what!? I don’t check it at all!
Technology is dumbing us down. And making us paranoid in unhealthy ways and panicky over little things.
In this age of immediate access to everything sometimes we can lose sight of what’s actually important to us (instead of what some social media house says should be important). We get caught up in the fad of the latest whatever.
I am a radio listener. In fact, I don’t actually own a television (the last time I did was 2006), so the radio is a constant companion of mine. Recently I heard three commercials with the exact same punchline: a “free” product is being offered and the potential customer is calling customer service wanting to know what the “catch” is. The products are in 3 different fields, but it makes me wonder where our creativity has gone.
Kids don’t even know how to play anymore if it’s not attached to their I-Pod! Neither do adults, for that matter.
AND, much of the media is designed to play tricks on your psyche. Indeed, this is what the whole field of Marketing is based on.
But don’t lose sight of things that are really, genuinely important to you just because some media ploy directs you to think that way. Try getting back to Intuition. You know what is good for your children, your family and your SELF! Trust your own rhythms about things. You are probably correct.
You also know what you can afford and what you cannot. Get back to basics on things like a family budget and bedtimes for your kids!
Try this: Take a technology break at least once each week. Go for a walk or read a book, or just sit and do nothing. (WITHOUT the use of your cell phone or other gadgets!)
Whatever you do, get back to thinking! Repeat daily.
You Know I HAVE HUGS!
As Always,
~Charli B.
